In 1402 the city starts the construction of its city hall. In 1455 the statue of our patron saint, Saint Michael, is placed on the spire of the tower to protect the city against evil. The building will become the symbol of city freedoms and the wealth and might of the nation's future capital. She will boast magnificent tapestries, produced here in Brussels, and paintings by Rogier van der Weyden.
Unfortunately, in 1695, the center of Brussels will be bombarded by the French. This will not only result in the destruction of 4000 wooden houses, but will also utterly destroy the inside of our city hall.
The completely rebuilt and renovated building will be officially inaugurated in 1717.
We are more than proud to be able to guide you around this magnificent building.
