Here is the confluent of the Meuse and Sambre rivers which is dominated by the fortified citadel. It used to have, until the 20th c, a military function since it was one of the largest citadels of Europe in the 17th and 18th c. A winding road leads you to the top of the citadel where one can appreciate an exceptional viewpoint.
A walk through the historic centre of Namur will take us to the old vegetable market place, the beautiful baroque façade of the St Loup church and to the classical-styled St Aubain cathedral.
The majestic 17th and 18th c mansions and little quaint shops give a wonderful atmosphere to this university town but also capital of the Wallonia region. After seeing the superb views of the Meuse valley and the remains of many castles, we can admire the city of Dinant which is squeezed between river and cliffs. Dinant is also where Adolphe Sax was born. Strawberries and “Couques” of Dinant are culinary specialties.
This tour doesn't provide visits inside the buildings.
